WELSH CONVERSATION GROUPS

The Welsh Society of Western New England has added another session to speak Welsh on Zoom, expanding the opportunity for Welsh learners to become more confident when speaking Welsh.

No more “deer-in-the-headlights”! Our objective was, and always will be, to provide a safe space to speak Welsh together.

Level 1 & 2 will be limited to 8 people and Level 3 to 12.

These sessions are not classes. You must be learning on your own. See links to online learning opportunities in the ONLINE RESOURCES FOR LEARNING WELSH section further down this page.

LEVEL 1 Beginners’ Welsh Conversation:

• 30 minutes, twice a month on Wednesdays at 5PM Must be learning Welsh in your own time
• Basic conversation for beginners
• Aim is to begin being comfortable speaking Welsh.
• Led by Christine McSorley

LEVEL 2 Intermediate Welsh Conversation: DATES NOT CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

• 30-60 minutes, twice a month on Mondays at 5pm
• at least 1-2 years of learning Welsh on your own
• Intermediate level conversation: alphabet, basic conversation using topics, reading out loud, pronunciation. Aim is to become comfortable speaking Welsh.
• Led by Christine McSorley.

LEVEL 3 Intermediate PLUS Conversation:

• 60 minutes, every Tuesday at 5:30 - 6:30PM
• more than 2 years of learning Welsh on your own
• Using a list of questions/topic, using maps, and paintings or drawings to talk about content.
• Aim is to be comfortable speaking Welsh, often without reading from text as well as listening comprehension.
• Led by Susan Davies Sit - for content

Online Resources for Learning Welsh

Say Something in Welsh

This online community of learners offers three different levels of audio courses with the intent of helping all learners to speak and understand Welsh easily and naturally. It avoids wasting time on complicated grammar rules and reading/writing. Based on the latest research in language learning, the course provides downloadable MP3 files for free. The entire introductory course of 25 lessons, the practice sessions and vocabulary units are all entirely free of charge. Give it a go and you'll be speaking Welsh in no time!


Duolingo

Free interactive, game-style lessons include a variety of speaking, listening, translation, and multiple choice challenges.


Cymdeithas Madog

The Welsh Studies Institute in North America Inc. dedicated to helping North Americans learn, use and enjoy the Welsh language. It takes its name from Madog ab Owain Gwynedd, a Welsh prince who (legend says) sailed to America in the 12th century.


Quizlet

Learner-created flashcards in a variety of languages. Search "Welsh" for word lists in Cymraeg.


Childhood Stories has one of the largest collections of Welsh English dual language short stories, plus many wordlists with many example sentences as well.


University of Wales Trinity St. David

This online dictionary has been available for several years and offers both English-Welsh and Welsh-English translations.


 

Parallel Cymru

This digital magazine presents free bilingual articles and resources in a way that may be helpful to those trying to learn the Welsh language
